Neither is superior in the abstract. A tooled belt in soft chrome leather would sag; a slouchy shoulder bag in firm vegetable-tanned leather would fight the shape it was designed to have.
What happens after tanning?
Tanning is roughly the halfway point. The stages that follow determine colour, softness, and surface, and they are where most of the perceived quality is decided.
- Retanning adjusts firmness and fullness, letting a tanner tune the same base hide towards different end uses.
- Dyeing colours the leather, either through the full thickness or only at the surface. Through-dyed leather shows the same colour when scratched; surface-dyed leather shows a pale core.
- Fatliquoring reintroduces oils and fats so fibres slide against each other instead of gluing together as they dry. This single step largely decides suppleness.
- Drying, by hanging, vacuum, or tension frames, controls how much the hide shrinks and how uniform the final area is.
- Staking and milling mechanically soften the dried leather; drum milling raises a pebbled grain.
- Finishing applies the surface layer, from almost nothing to a thick pigmented film.
Which finish is on the leather you are holding?
Finish type explains why one bag shows every mark and another shows none. Aniline leather is dyed without a covering pigment layer, so natural grain, scars, and tonal variation stay visible; it marks easily and ages beautifully. Semi-aniline carries a light pigment coat while keeping much of the grain visible. Pigmented leather is coated with an opaque layer, sometimes with a grain pattern embossed into it, making it uniform, durable, easy to clean, and largely incapable of developing patina.

- Look at a cut edge. Real leather shows a fibrous cross-section; bonded or heavily coated material shows a distinct backing layer or a foam-like core.
- Press with a thumb. Full-grain leather shows fine wrinkles around the pressure point and recovers; coated split leather tends to crease flatly and hold the crease.
- Check the reverse. The flesh side of genuine leather is fibrous and slightly fuzzy, not woven and not smooth plastic.
- Smell it. Tanned leather has a distinct scent; a strong chemical or plastic odour suggests a heavy synthetic finish.
- Look at grain variation across a large panel. Natural hide varies; a repeating identical pattern indicates an embossed print.
Then check workmanship, which is a separate question from material. Run a fingernail along an edge — a burnished or painted edge is smooth and sealed, while a rushed one fuzzes immediately. Look at corners where several layers meet: flat means the maker skived properly, lumpy means they did not.

Is vegetable-tanned leather more environmentally friendly?
It is more complicated than the marketing suggests. Vegetable tanning avoids chromium but uses large volumes of water and plant tannins over a long cycle, while modern chrome tanning is faster and more efficient per hide but depends on effluent treatment being done properly. The meaningful variable is how a specific tannery manages its water and waste, not the method label. Ask about the source rather than assuming.
Why does my new leather bag smell strongly?
A natural tanned-leather scent is normal and fades over weeks. A sharp chemical or solvent smell usually comes from a heavy surface finish or adhesives that have not fully cured, and it should also diminish with airing.
