Booking a Bali custom leather design consultation is the step that separates “I want something like this” from a pattern an artisan can actually cut, and it is available both in our Bali studio and remotely for clients abroad.
The consultation exists to remove ambiguity before anyone cuts leather, because a hide cannot be un-cut.
We convert every vague instruction into a decision that a maker can execute without guessing — “a bit stiffer” becomes a thickness in millimetres, “gold hardware” becomes a specific finish and fitting size.

- Brief review: what the piece is for, who carries it, what it must hold
- Material selection: hide type, tannage, thickness, grain, and colour
- Construction: lining or unlined, turned edges or raw burnished edges, stitch type
- Hardware: zips, buckles, rivets, D-rings, magnetic or turn-lock closures
- Dimensions and ergonomics: strap drop, gusset depth, pocket layout
- Outcome: a written specification, a cost range, and a production timeline

What Should You Prepare Before The Session?
The strongest briefs are specific about function and loose about styling, because function constrains geometry. A client who says “it must hold a 14-inch laptop, a water bottle, and fit under an airline seat” gives the pattern maker more usable information than a mood board of ten bags.

You do not need to draw. A clear photograph with arrows and a few notes is more useful than a polished illustration that hides the construction.

How Does A Design Move From Idea To Finished Piece?
Custom leather follows a fixed sequence, and skipping a stage is the most common reason a bespoke project disappoints. A physical paper or card pattern is made and checked before any hide is cut, because pattern errors are cheap on paper and expensive in leather.

For one-off personal pieces, the prototype and the final piece are often the same object, with adjustments made in progress. No. Roughly half of custom projects begin as a remote conversation, and the work translates well to messages and video because leather decisions are visual and dimensional. What remote clients lose is the ability to touch the hide, which we solve by shipping small leather swatches before the specification is locked.
In-studio consultation
You can handle full hides under natural light, feel the difference between 1.2 mm and 2.0 mm leather, and hold hardware samples against the material. If you are already travelling to Bali, book the studio session.
Remote consultation
The work translates well to messages and video because leather decisions are visual and dimensional. The remote route reaches the same specification with an extra swatch step in the middle.

What Drives The Cost Of Bespoke Leather?
Leather is sold by the hide and measured in square feet or square decimetres, and no hide yields one hundred percent usable area — natural scars, growth marks, and belly stretch are cut around. That yield loss, not the sticker price of the skin, is what makes a large single-panel bag disproportionately more expensive than a small one.
The other cost drivers are labour and construction. Hand saddle-stitching takes many times longer than machine stitching for the same seam length; turned and lined edges take longer than raw burnished edges; and solid brass hardware costs more than plated alloy. We quote in writing after the specification is fixed, so the figure reflects your actual construction rather than a generic average.
If you arrive with your own design, it stays yours — we treat client artwork, patterns, and specifications as confidential and do not put a client’s bespoke design into our public catalogue without written permission. For brands, this is worth agreeing in writing at the start rather than after the sample exists.
If a design is developed jointly during consultation, we will state clearly in your written specification what is exclusive to you and what is a standard studio construction that we also use elsewhere. Being explicit up front prevents the awkward conversation that follows a successful launch.
